Leveling A Paladin – A Few Tips

Since we’ve already covered everything from talent specs to glyphs, weapons, and paladin specific grinding spots, I thought it might be a good idea to cover a few basic tips that aren’t directly related to leveling, but make the leveling process much easier. I want Paladin Leveling Guide to be your one-stop shop for learning about how to make WoW easier, and these tips will definitely give you a smoother experience.

Take gathering professions to start. I’ve found that the best professions for a paladin while leveling are skinning and mining. Both of them generate quite a bit of gold, and mining is complementary to engineering, blacksmithing, and jewelcrafting, which are the 3 best professions for a paladin at endgame, crafting-wise. Keep mining and pick one of the 3.
Make sure to use a good paladin leveling build. This can make the difference between feeling like an unstoppable beast and feeling like a weakling smacking monsters with a twig. If you feel like your current spec isn’t working for you, do some research and respec to something better.
Keep your weapon up to date. If you’re leveling as retribution, you must keep your weapon upgraded as often as you can afford it. If it’s green, every 3 levels is a good marker. Blues every 5-7 levels depending on what’s available. Instances are often the best source of good weapons, so try to run each instance once or twice to see what you can pick up. If you’re leveling protection, this rule applies to your shield as well.
If you have a level 80 already, invest in the shoulders and chest that apply the 10% experience gain. They stack, and it is absolutely amazing how much of a difference 20% extra xp can make in the leveling process. On top of that, they’re 2 pieces of gear you don’t have to replace till 80. By the same token, if you can spare the shards, pick up a Bloodied Arcanite Reaper and you’ve got number 3 covered too.

Paladin Leveling Guide – Cataclysm Thoughts

Well, I’ve had a while to ruminate on the upcoming Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft now, and I have to say, I’m quite happy about it. Ignoring the amount of work that it’s going to take me to update Paladin Leveling Guide with all of the leveling changes that they are making, the whole thing sounds like a lot of fun.

A few general points:

Very happy about the level cap only being raised by 5 levels. I thought this was the path that WOTLK should have taken, but better late than never.
I may actually willingly spend some time in Desolace now that the landscape won’t make me nauseous. For the sake of Paladins everywhere, I hope they keep all of the demons around though.
I see a Worgen druid alt in my future.
Also, a Goblin warlock.
Hopefully the new PVP stuff is better than Isle of Conquest.
Path of Titans – We’ve been needing an AA system for ages, so this is a good thing.
I am way more excited than I should be for flying in Azeroth.

As far as Paladin changes go, I’m hoping for a much more dynamic and flexible Holy tree, a more… active… Protection tree, and, well, as for Ret, maybe they could make it more smashy? Not sure really, I think Retribution is fine as is. They’ve said they’re going to focus more on active abilities and less on passive stat / damage boosts, so I’m not sure how they’re going to work that out with Ret, given that a large percentage of the tree is dedicated to just making our melee stronger.

In any case, I’m incredibly stoked for the expansion, and I will make sure to let you guys know about anything cool that comes up.

Paladin Leveling Guide – Leveling As A Holy Paladin

I’ve recently been inspired to level my fourth Paladin, who was set up as a twink for 29 battlegrounds and is currently geared and spec’d for healing. This was ideal, as the main reason I decided to level her up was to see what it’s like to group from level 30 – 80. You, the loyal readers of Paladin Leveling Guide, will be privy to my experiences in this new journey.

I’ve got a bit of an admission to make here. I’ve not been much of a grouper while leveling my previous toons. My routine has generally involved getting runs through Wailing Caverns, Scarlet Monastery, Zul Farrak, and Blackrock Depths either by a friend or with a high-level character on my second account. My desire to group was kickstarted when I respec’d pally #3 to Holy on a whim around level 45 and decided to heal my way through Zul Farrak with my friend tanking and a random group of DPSers. It went surprisingly well, and I found healing infinitely more engaging than tanking or DPS.

So, that said, I dinged 30 yesterday and found a group for Scarlet Monastery Graveyard, and it was awesome. I’ve always looked on 1-60 as a kind of toll that you have to pay to get to the fun quests in TBC and WotLK, but for the first time since getting my 1st character to 60, I was actually genuinely enjoying myself in content that I had seen tons of times!

Anyway, enough about me. Paladin Leveling Guide is all about YOU, the people who haven’t leveled 3 paladins already (lol) so let’s get down to how this benefits you. Here’s the build I’m going to be using:

That will get me to 60, and from there I should have a pretty good idea of where I want to go talent-wise. For instances I plan to hit up all the usuals, Scarlet Monastery till 39 or so, Uldaman till 41ish, then Zul Farrak, Sunken Temple, Blackrock Depths, and then I’ll probably quest out the last few level to Outlands.

3.2 Paladin Changes

Patch 3.2 is just around the corner, and it looks like Paladins are set for some sweeping changes. Before we get to the Paladin specific changes, let’s chat about some of the leveling related items in the list.

Normal ground mounts are going to be available starting at level 20, with the riding skill costing 4 gold. Epic ground mounts will be made available at level 40 for 50 gold, and regular flying riding skill will be purchasable for 600 gold. Also, the cast time for all ground mounts will be lowered to 1.5 seconds. Getting around faster in the earlier levels is going to make leveling new characters way easier.

In my books though, the more exciting change is experience from Battlegrounds! I’ve been waiting for this one since release. I never imagined I would have to wait so long to get experience from killing the opposing faction in a Warcraft game, but now that it’s almost here, no hard feelings Blizz. The general breakdown is that there will be experience gains from completing battleground objectives. You will have the option to turn this feature off by paying an NPC 10 gold, and it can be turned back on for the same amount. Now maybe my Alliance Rogue will see some leveling love!

As for the Paladin changes, I still haven’t tested them out, so I don’t really have anything brilliantly wise or insightful to add yet, but I’ll include the notes below for your perusal:

Blessing of Sanctuary: This blessing now also increases stamina by 10%. This effect is not cumulative with Blessing of Kings.

Charger: Can now be learned at level 40.

Exorcism: Now has a 1.5 second cast time, but can once again be used on players.

Hand of Reckoning: Redesigned. Now does damage only when the target does not currently have the caster targeted, but damage done increased to 50% of attack power, occurring after the taunt effect is applied.

Judgements: Some of these attacks were considered ranged and some melee. They are all now considered melee attacks that can’t be dodged, parried or blocked.

Judgement of Light: Now heals for 2% of the attacker’s maximum health instead of a variable amount based on the spell power and attack power of the judging paladin.

Lay on Hands: The buff from this ability now reduces the physical damage taken by the target by 10/20% instead of increasing the target’s armor.

Righteous Fury: No longer has a duration, remaining until cancelled or death. Also cancelled when a Paladin activates a different talent specialization.

Sacred Shield: When a paladin casts Flash of Light on a target with this buff, they also now place a heal-over-time effect on the target, healing that target for 100% of the Flash of Light amount over 12 seconds.

Seal of Blood: This ability has been removed.

Seal of the Martyr: This ability has been removed.

Seal of Vengeance and Seal of Corruption: These seals have been redesigned to deal substantially more damage. Now, once a paladin has 5 copies of the debuff from these seals on his or her target, on each swing the paladin will deal 33% weapon damage as Holy, with critical strikes dealing double damage. In addition, the damage-over-time effect is now considered a melee attack instead of a spell attack.

Shield of Righteousness: Now deals 100% of shield block value as damage instead of 130%. In addition, the benefit from additional block value this ability gains is now subject to diminishing returns. Diminishing returns occur once block value exceeds 30 times the player’s level and caps the maximum damage benefit from shield block value at 34.5 times the player’s level.

Warhorse: Can now be learned at level 20.

Talents

Holy
- Beacon of Light: The healing amount on the Beacon of Light target is now based on the total healing done (including over-healing) instead of the effective healing done. Radius increased to 60 yards. Multiple Paladins can now have this active on the same target. Buff indicating a player is within range of the Beacon target is no longer displayed.
- Divine Intellect: This talent now gives 2/4/6/8/10% increased intellect instead of 3/6/9/12/15%.
- Illumination: This talent now returns 30% of the mana cost of the spell instead of 60%.
Protection
- Ardent Defender: Redesigned. Any damage that takes the paladin below 35% health is reduced. This reduction applies only to the portion that pushes the paladin below 35% health (example: a paladin at 50% health takes a 40% hit; the first 15% hits as normal while the next 25% is reduced). In addition, once every 2 minutes an attack that would have killed the paladin will fail to kill, and instead heal the paladin for up to 10/20/30% of maximum health depending on the paladin’s defense rating (example: a paladin with defense equal to only 5 times his or her level will receive no healing from the talent, while a paladin who is immune to critical strikes from boss creatures through defense will receive the maximum amount).
- Guarded by the Light: This talent will no longer cause Divine Plea’s duration to be refreshed by using Judgement of Wisdom, Judgement of Justice, or Judgement of Light.
Retribution
- Art of War: Now only applies to melee critical hits, but will make your next Flash of Light or Exorcism instant. In addition, this talent now provides notification in the floating combat text when it activates.
- Crusader Strike: Damage reduced to 75% weapon damage to match the new 4-second cooldown. Mana cost reduced to 5% of base mana.
- Seal of Command: Redesigned. This seal now deals 36% weapon damage on every swing, and deals substantially less judgement damage.
- Vindication: Redesigned. Now lowers target attack power, is consistent and does not stack with Demoralizing Shout.

Best Paladin Leveling Weapons Pt. 1

As a Retribution Paladin, pretty much nothing is as important as your weapon. You want the best 2-hander you can get at all times. As such, I thought it’d be handy for me to include some tips on when and where to get the best paladin leveling weapons. Y’know, since people generally want a leveling tip or two when the site is freakin’ called Paladin Leveling Guide… Usually. Anyway, here’s the beef!

This lovely piece of kit is the Haunting Blade, available as a drop from the Rare Elite (Read: You’ll be doing a lot of runs for this) boss, Deathsworn Captain. The super-slow speed makes it ideal for Seal of Command, and if the rest of your gear is at all decent you should be 3-shotting same level mobs with this. Leveling a Paladin at 20 with Seal of Command is already cake, throw in this weapon and it’s a total joke. Shadowfang Keep is a great instance for leveling Paladins what with all the undead too.

Best Paladin Leveling Spots – Pt. 3

We’re back for another edition of Paladin Leveling Guide, moving on to one of the best Paladin leveling spots in the game, Mannoroc Coven in Desolace. This is a killer place to grind while leveling a Paladin, packed to the brim with demons for you to use all of your offensive holy spells on. Once again, if you can grab a blue weapon and enchant it with Demonslaying, it will make your time here much more enjoyable.

With how large of an area this is, you won’t really need to plan your route to optimize respawn times, so just plow through them in rows like some sort of simile that I’m too tired to think up… of DOOM! As usual, we’ll have more Paladin leveling tips in the next installment of Paladin Leveling Guide.

I’d like to interrupt our regularly scheduled "Best Leveling Spots" programming for a Paladin Leveling Guide special:

Leveling as a Protection Paladin

OK, I know a lot of people get sick of the whole "Grab a big 2 hander and make with the smashy smashy" thing. I get that. I personally think that ye who scorn the smashy need to get your gray matter checked out, but that’s as may be. What it comes down to is that I’ve seen a lot of people leveling their Paladins as Protection spec, and I know for a fact they’ve been getting some bad advice on the forums and in-game.

Since my goal is to reduce the level of Paladin suckitude by 1000% while simultaneously increasing the fun factor by a similar amount, I decided to lay bare what you will need, in terms of both gear and spec, to succeed while leveling as a Protection Paladin.

Gear

Make sure you have a blue-quality shield and weapon. Update them whenever you can, within reason. I personally would not start until I had Aegis of the Scarlet Commander and Hand of Righteousness as their awesomeness will carry you until the later talents kick in and really make you into a beast. Focus on Block Value, Strength, Stamina, and Defense in your gear. When you start pulling camps of 10 mobs that run out to get their friends, trust me, you’d rather drink after than run out of health.

Also, very important… GET A SHIELD SPIKE. The best one you can afford. Seriously, it makes a huge difference.

Talent Build and Strategy

In my estimation, this is the best Protection Paladin leveling build possible. I skipped the group talents, for the most part. Why? Because I’m assuming you’ll be grinding it out. Do yourself a favor and don’t touch the Protection tree until you hit level 40. The build revolves around Reckoning, Holy Shield, and Blessing of Sanctuary. Without all 3 of those, it’s pretty weak.

Keep Retribution Aura up, round up a camp of melee mobs (the faster they hit, the better) on your mount, drop a Consecration, Seal and Judge as needed, and pop Holy Shield. Now it’s just a matter of hoping all of the little numbers don’t crash your computer. Since you’ll be dodging, blocking, and parrying like crazy, Blessing of Sanctuary should keep your mana pretty decent. Between Retribution Aura, Consecration, Holy Shield, and your shield spike you’ve got crazy reflective damage. Keep Seal of Light and Judgment of Light up and you’re good to go!

Best Paladin Leveling Spots – Pt.2

Quanta here, and I’m back with another installment of the Paladin Leveling Guide! This time around we’re going to be exploring my favorite part of Ashenvale as a Paladin, the demon-infested plot of land known as Felfire Hill.

Enjoy this while it lasts, there aren’t a whole lot of grinding areas like this for Paladins to level in. Between this and the next area we’ll cover, you may want to grab a nice blue-quality 2 handed weapon and enchant it with Demonslaying, because you’ll be slaying a LOT of demons. Much like Raven Hill, the easiest strategy is to just go around in a big loop. By the time you get back where you started, there should be respawns. Happy hunting!

Best Paladin Leveling Spots – Pt. 1

Hey guys, more Paladin Leveling Guide goodness coming your way here. I thought I would share a couple of my favorite spots to grind with a Paladin. The obvious requirement for a good Paladin leveling spot is a whole bunch of Undead mobs that you can use your anti-Undead spells against, and there seems to be quite a few spots in game that fit that requirement.

The first one is:

Paladin Leveling Spots - Raven Hill

The infamous Raven Hill. A short walk from the lovely town of Darkshire in Duskwood, Raven Hill is packed to the brim with ghouls, skeletons, shades, and the odd spider or 10. From 24-30ish there aren’t any better places to level a Paladin. Sense Undead, Turn Undead, and Exorcism all get their fair share of use here with all the roaming Undead.

You can basically just work in a circle around the whole cemetery. If you run out of mobs or there’s too much competition, feel free to drop into the crypts and clear those out. Make sure to tackle the Mor’Ladim quest chain and the usual “Kill X zombies” quests while your here, and the levels will fly by.
